Project – Moonlit Maple: Carving out the tree

DSC_0042_598

The underpainting is sanded bone black and the titanium white areas will be where the silvery moonlight shines, delineating the rough bark. The middle ground is sanded phthalo green yellow shade on sanded bone black as well, while the sky above is prussian blue heavily applied.

I’ll be working in detail from the tree in the foreground to deep shadows of thick bush in the middle ground and finally adding stars into the sky.

At least, that’s my intent… 😀

As it is now, the piece holds promise. The final touches, though, are still far away and the tree bark needs much more texture with dark browns, grays and greens giving it substance. Then I’ll be able to tweak out the trees in the background.
